The world of work is not what it used to be. Every day feels a bit more uncertain, and things are changing faster than ever. As someone working in HR, I’ve felt this shift deeply — and I’ve come to realise that the old ways of hiring and engaging employees just don’t work anymore.

That’s where the idea of the BANI world comes in. BANI stands for Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible. It’s a way to describe the kind of world we live in now:

  • Brittle: Things may look strong but can break suddenly under pressure.
  • Anxious: People feel stressed and unsure about the future.
  • Nonlinear: Actions and results don’t always connect the way we expect.
  • Incomprehensible: Sometimes, it’s hard to even understand what’s going on.

These words might sound a bit heavy, but they explain a lot about how people feel at work today — including candidates, employees, and even leaders.

How It’s Changing the Way We Hire

In the past, hiring was about ticking boxes — qualifications, years of experience, and technical skills. But now, we look for something more:

  • People who can learn quickly
  • People who stay calm during change
  • People who work well with others, even when things are unclear

We’ve started using tools to understand not just skills, but also a candidate’s attitude, mindset, and ability to adapt. The goal is to find people who can grow with the job — not just fill a position.

How It’s Changing Employee Engagement

Let’s be honest — people are tired. There’s so much happening in the world, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why just offering free coffee or bonuses isn’t enough anymore.

Now, what really matters is:

  • Mental health support
  • Feeling safe and respected at work
  • Knowing your work has meaning
  • Having open and honest conversations

We’ve shifted our focus from just “keeping employees happy” to truly understanding them. That means checking in more often, giving space for feedback, and building trust every day.

Learning Never Stops

In a BANI world, even the best skills get outdated fast. So we’re building a culture where learning is part of everyday life — not just something you do once a year.

We encourage:

  • Small learning moments through short videos or mini-workshops
  • Learning from peers, not just experts
  • Flexibility, so people can learn in ways that suit them

What Performance Looks Like Now

Before, performance reviews were strict — based on numbers, deadlines, and reports. But now we understand that growth doesn’t always follow a straight line.

So, we’ve made reviews more human:

  • More regular check-ins instead of once-a-year meetings
  • Focus on progress and effort, not just results
  • Support and coaching, not just ratings

What We’re Becoming

Being an employer in today’s world means more than offering a job. It means being real, kind, and open. People want to work where they are seen and heard, not just where they get paid.

So now, we’re not just building teams — we’re building trust.

Final Thoughts

This new world is messy, but it’s also full of chances to do better. As HR professionals, we have the power to make workplaces more human, more caring, and more ready for change.

The BANI world may be tough, but it’s also pushing us to grow — and that’s something I’m grateful for.
